That is ridiculous statement. He obviously doesn’t understand how important Google or Bing is to the social conversation.

I heard a statistic the other month that stated approximately 80% of all web sessions start with a search. People don’t want to have to go to a new source for information then do another search. You’re creating unneeded friction for the searcher. There are hundreds of benefits of being listed on Google and removing yourself from that conversation would be detrimental to your company and brand.

Li,

You pose an interesting point about social media being a proxy for search in being able to discover and highlight ‘news content’.

I also put forward a theory about News Corp maybe considering becoming a search company (http://www.sinotechblog.com.cn/index.php/digital-marketing-inner-circle/1-latest-news/458-a-murdoch-search-engine) but then why bother if he can leverage MySpace and the social media channel.
